I help organizations make complex systems understandable.

Hi, I’m Torrey Owens, a Senior Product and Service Designer based in Dallas, Texas.

I help people solve really hard problems by making confusing things easier to understand. Throughout my career, I’ve worked on healthcare, cybersecurity, defense, and enterprise software where people rely on technology to do important jobs. My role is to listen, ask good questions, understand how things work today, and design experiences that help people work more efficiently and make better decisions.

Whether I’m mapping a complex workflow, facilitating discovery with stakeholders, or building prototypes with engineering, my goal is always the same: reduce friction, bring clarity to complexity, and create products that people actually enjoy using.

I’m currently furthering my education with a B.S. degree in Human-Centered AI (HCAI) at Texas Tech University, where I’m exploring how AI can help designers and users work together while keeping human judgment at the center of the experience.

The principles below have shaped how I approach design, collaboration, and problem solving throughout my career. They continue to guide my work whether I’m facilitating discovery, mapping complex systems, or designing products that help people make better decisions.

The biggest challenge is rarely the technology… it’s helping people develop a shared understanding of the problem they’re trying to solve.

Steve Krug’s principle of Don’t Make Me Think still holds true today. Whether I’m designing an interface, facilitating a workshop, or mapping a service, my goal is the same: reduce unnecessary cognitive effort so people can focus on what matters.

The best interface won’t solve the wrong problem.

Steve Portigal reminds us that interviewing users isn’t about collecting opinions, it is about uncovering motivations, behaviors, and unmet needs. Discovery creates shared understanding, aligns teams, and helps ensure we’re solving the right problem before we begin designing solutions.

The more complex the system, the more valuable good questions become.

My career has never followed a straight line because I’ve always been driven by curiosity. Every role has expanded the way I think from writing software, to leading creative teams, to designing enterprise systems, and now studying human-centered AI. I’ve learned that asking better questions almost always leads to better outcomes than assuming I already have the answers.

Every organization has shaped the way I think as a designer. While the industries, technologies, and missions have varied, each experience reinforced the value of curiosity, collaboration, and designing with the people doing the work in mind.

I’m currently seeking remote Senior Product, UX, and Service Design opportunities where I can help organizations simplify complex systems and improve decision-making. My experience spans defense, healthcare, automotive, cybersecurity, telecommunications, and enterprise software, and I’m also open to hybrid opportunities within the Dallas–Fort Worth area.
